Girls in Tech Australia Evolves into Her Tech Circle to Continue Empowering Women in Technology
Girls in Tech Australia is thrilled to announce the launch of Her Tech Circle, a new volunteer led independent organisation dedicated to empowering women in technology. This exciting transformation follows the recent closure of Girls in Tech HQ, marking a new chapter for the Australian chapter, which has grown into a vibrant community of nearly 18,000 members.
Renece Brewster, Co-Managing Director of Her Tech Circle, stated: "While it’s bittersweet to see Girls in Tech HQ close its doors, we are incredibly excited about the opportunities that Her Tech Circle will bring. Our mission to create a thriving community for women in tech remains unwavering. We’re ready to continue supporting women at all stages of their tech careers, fostering an environment where they can lead, innovate, and excel."
Kris Chatson, Co-Managing Director, added: "Her Tech Circle represents a fresh start but with the same dedication to our cause. We aim to build on the strong foundation we've established, tailoring our efforts to the unique needs of the Australian tech community. This transformation allows us to innovate and grow, and we can’t wait to see what we achieve together."
About Her Tech Circle
Her Tech Circle is committed to two key areas:
Creating a Supportive Community: Offering a network that supports women throughout their tech careers.
Facilitating Career Progression: Hosting events and discussions designed to empower women to advance their careers and improve workplace environments.
The Importance of This Community:
In a rapidly evolving tech industry, the representation and support of women remain crucial. Studies have shown that companies with diverse teams are more innovative and perform better financially. However, Australian women still face significant challenges in the tech sector:
Underrepresentation: Women constitute only 28% of the tech workforce in Australia.
Leadership Gaps: Only 16% of tech leadership positions are held by women.
Supportive Workplaces: 50% of women leave the tech industry in Australia between year 3 and 4 of their careers, with a large proportion stating its due to a bro culture at the workplace - this is unacceptable
Pay Disparity: Women in tech earn, on average, 20% less than their male counterparts.
Her Tech Circle aims to address these disparities by creating an environment where women can thrive. Despite the challenges faced by Girls in Tech HQ, Girls in Tech Australia has always focused on local goals, creating programs that address the needs of the Australian community. The transition to Her Tech Circle ensures continuity in these efforts while introducing new opportunities for growth and impact.
Signature Events Hosted by Her Tech Circle: In 2024, Her Tech Circle has planned over 20 events across Australia to empower women in tech.
Here are just a few highlights:
Career Kickstarter: This event provides attendees with career advice such as interview coaching, resume advice, LinkedIn page feedback, a new headshot, and much more.
Mentor Masterclass: Attendees are guided to craft a personal elevator pitch and then have the opportunity to refine it with senior women in tech mentors.
Executive Dinners: These dinners aim to create a meaningful and supportive atmosphere for senior-level women and allies in the tech field. The purpose is to facilitate engaging discussions on topics that impact us and explore ways to collectively empower and uplift the next generation of women in tech.
Our Vision
Her Tech Circle's mission is to create an Australian movement where women in tech can thrive, lead, and contribute to industry advancements. We aim to instigate change from within, providing education and empowerment that enables women to confidently step up, speak out, and claim their rightful seat at the tech table.
"We are building something truly special with Her Tech Circle. Our community's support has been incredible, and we are excited to continue this journey together, creating a powerful force for positive change in the tech industry," said Renece Brewster.
